GLEN ELLEN, CA – Plans to demolish the historic Sonoma House have ignited strong opposition from local residents, preservationists, and environmental advocates.

Eldridge Renewal LLC, the developer selected by the state to revamp the Sonoma Developmental Center campus, recently submitted its fourth proposal to Sonoma County. The company aims to construct a nearly 1,000-unit housing community on the property but has drawn criticism for its plan to tear down Sonoma House, a landmark built in 1897.

The latest development blueprint proposes replacing the historic structure with an environmental education center, a move that has further fueled controversy. The Sonoma Ecology Center weighed in on the issue, expressing concerns that the proposal “may be a ploy to divide our community.”

The application is now set for review by Permit Sonoma, marking the next step in what has become a heated debate over the future of the historic site.
